Eagle Synergistics conducted a High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) at an active airport to delineate chlorinated solvent contamination and update the site's Conceptual Site Model. MIHPT technology combined with real-time data from a portable gas chromatograph enabled precise identification of DNAPL presence, hydrogeologic conditions, and potential secondary hydrocarbon sources. The integration of lithological, hydraulic, and contaminant data in real-time provided a detailed understanding of plume behavior, ultimately supporting a more focused and effective remedial design.

Using HRSC to Delineate Dual Hydrocarbon Plumes at a Former Fuel and Auto Facility

Wednesday, July 16th, 2025 at 10:00 AM MDT

A former retail fuel and auto facility faced persistent free product issues despite multiple remediation efforts, including four dual phase mobile vacuum extraction events. To address lingering uncertainties in contaminant distribution, a High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) was conducted using Optical Image Profiler (OIP) and Membrane Interface Probe (MIP). This investigation identified two distinct hydrocarbon plumes at separate depths, enabling precise delineation of both free-phase and dissolved-phase contamination.

High Resolution Site Characterization to Assess PFAS Migration and Drinking Water Risk at a U.S. Air Force Base

To address PFAS contamination linked to historical firefighting activities, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Department of the Air Force conducted a non-time-critical removal action at an Air Force base. High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) using HPT-EC and Ground Water Sampler tools was performed to map subsurface features and assess the potential for PFAS migration into drinking water sources. The HPT-EC data provided real-time data on permeability, hydrogeology, and potential confining intervals. The detailed subsurface understanding enabled the delineation of PFAS pathways and plume extent, allowing for more accurate risk assessment and development of a targeted remedial strategy.

Breaking the Cycle: Eliminating Rebound and Achieving Regulatory Closure with HRSC

Wednesday, July 30th, 2025 at 10:00 AM MDT

A refined petroleum release from a pipeline led to extensive subsurface contamination and over a decade of unsuccessful remediation attempts due to persistent rebound from undetected secondary sources. A revised Conceptual Site Model using High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) and 3D modeling identified sequestered hydrocarbons in the vadose zone as the root cause. A targeted remedial approach using a patented non-ionic surfactant eliminated these sources, followed by in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) to treat dissolved contaminants. The strategy rapidly achieved all remedial goals within two years, avoided further rebound, and secured No Further Action status, demonstrating the effectiveness of precise, aggressive remediation over prolonged, incremental efforts.

Integrating HRSC and 3D Modeling to Identify Multiple Sources at an Active Manufacturing Facility

Wednesday, August 6th, 2025, at 11:00 AM MDT

At a manufacturing facility, a hydraulic oil release led to widespread LNAPL presence and triggered a comprehensive site investigation. High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) using Optical Image Profiler (OIP) was conducted both inside and outside the active facility, despite challenging access conditions. The data collected was immediately incorporated into a 3D model, allowing real-time visualization and refinement of the Conceptual Site Model (CSM). This integrated approach identified multiple LNAPL sources and varying depth intervals of contamination that may have been missed with conventional methods. The resulting 3D model significantly accelerated source identification and informed effective screening of remedial strategies.

Advancing Subsurface Characterization Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR): A Case Study in Aquifer Property Mapping and Contaminate Pathway Identification

Wednesday, August 13th, 2025 at 10:00 AM MDT

This case study highlights the application of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technology to enhance subsurface characterization for environmental site investigations. NMR provides direct, non-invasive measurements of subsurface hydrogeologic properties such as porosity, water content, and hydraulic conductivity. This approach demonstrates how integrating advanced geophysical tools like NMR can reduce uncertainty and optimize site decision-making.
